What it does

Returns the moon phase for a date: a phase number, a named phase (New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, and so on), the approximate illuminated fraction as a percent, and whether the moon is waxing or waning.

Primary use cases

  • "What phase is the moon on <date>?"
  • Finding full or new moons for planning.

Good to know

date defaults to today. Phase is computed astronomically and is independent of location. Illumination is an approximation from the phase angle. Computed locally.
